Who these terms are between
These terms are an agreement between you (the person using Changa Changa, whether as a chama member, treasurer, chairperson, or secretary) and Changa Changa("we", "us"), a company registered in Kenya.
By creating an account or joining a chama, you agree to these terms. If you don't, don't use the platform. Simple as that.
What Changa Changa is (and isn't)
We provide software that helps Kenyan savings groups (chamas) manage contributions, rotations, loans, and communication. We are nota bank, a payment processor, or a licensed microfinance institution. We route money through Safaricom's Daraja API; funds settle directly to your chama's own paybill (or, if you've elected the platform paybill, briefly through a Changa Changa collection account before payout).
Your account
- Accounts are phone-number-based. Keep your SIM card secure. OTP codes sent to your phone are the only way to log in.
- You're responsible for any activity under your account. If you suspect someone else has access to your phone number or SIM, tell us and your mobile operator immediately.
- We may require KYC (a photo of a government-issued ID) before unlocking certain features like loans and wallet withdrawals.
Chamas and roles
A chama has four roles: chairperson, treasurer, secretary, and member. Each role has different permissions, which you can see in the app. You agree not to abuse administrative permissions. For example, chairpersons must not unilaterally remove members or redirect payouts outside of what the chama has agreed on.
Fees
We charge a small per-payment fee on money flowing through the platform:
- Platform paybill (default): 1.0% of each contribution.
- Own paybill (your chama plugs in its own Daraja credentials): 0.5%.
Members pay nothing to use the app. The fee is taken from the contribution when it arrives. Daraja transaction costs (the standard M-Pesa fees) are separate and set by Safaricom.
Money handling
- Withdrawals from the chama wallet require two separate admins to approve. One to initiate, a different one to sign off. No single person can move group funds alone.
- We reconcile all M-Pesa callbacks against our records. If a confirmed payment doesn't appear on your board within 5 minutes, contact us.
- Loans are issued from group funds at terms set by the chama, not by us. We track the ledger. We don't lend money ourselves.
Acceptable use
You agree not to use Changa Changa to:
- Launder money, commit fraud, or evade taxes.
- Harass or intimidate other members.
- Scrape, reverse-engineer, or stress-test the platform without written permission.
- Impersonate someone else or misrepresent who you are.
We may suspend or close accounts that do any of the above.
Data and privacy
Your data is governed by our privacy policy. In short: we collect what we need to run the platform, we don't sell it, and the group owns its chama history.
Service availability
We aim for high uptime but don't promise perfection. Scheduled maintenance, Safaricom outages, or power cuts may cause temporary unavailability. We're not liable for consequential damages (missed contributions, delayed payouts, etc.) arising from downtime beyond our reasonable control.
Termination
You can delete your account at any time from the profile page. If you're the only admin of an active chama, you'll need to promote another admin or close the chama first. We may close your account if you violate these terms. We'll give notice where reasonable.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of courts in Nairobi.
Changes
We'll update these terms occasionally. Usually to add clarity or reflect a new feature. Material changes will be announced via SMS and the app; continued use after a change means you accept the update.
